Tela Communications'
Placement Program
The Placement Program is a multi-faceted program designed to provide a
cost effective way to include an organization's Web site in all the major
and many of the specialized databases, subject catalogs and directories on the WWW.
The program is implemented in a variety of ways.
I. Internet Search Engines
There are a number of large information databases on the World-Wide Web.
Some of them utiltize "robots" (i.e. information gathering software) to scan the
Web on a regular basis seeking newly published or newly revised Web pages.
Some of the robots gather and enter the complete text of a document, some only
gather a document's name, URL or selected portions of text. Most of these
databases allow manual entry of information. This and preparing the
Web pages appropriately enables an organization to take maximum advantage
of the information that is available in the database.
The Tela Search Site was
created to enable quick and easy access to most of the large databases as
well as many of the Web's "niche" databases, subject catalogs and directories.
The search forms on each of the pages are configured to confine the search results
to only the keywords entered (wherever possible).
II. Internet Databases
Many sites provide databases which do not use Search Robots to gather information.
Listings are available to those who contact them. Some of these databases are
designed to focus on a particular subject, like Real Estate listings, Investments or
Electronic Information (books on disk, computer games, etc.).
Some permit a full description of services to be entered into the database.
Some permit only the URL (Uniform Resource Locator, e.g. the address) to be entered.
Many of these databases are free. Some charge a nominal fee for a listing.
The Internet Databases generally provide an on-line form which invites searches for active links to whatever keyword is entered. For example, when an individual enters the word, "chocolate", and clicks the "Submit" button on his computer, an Internet Database will, after a few moments, present the individual with a list of potential on-line resources relating to chocolate. Companies offering chocolate for sale, information about how chocolate is created, recipes containing chocolate and occasionally people named "Chocolate" (and other obscure references) may appear, along with the addresses (usually clickable links to each of the sites.)
Tela maintains and continually updates a master list containing the locations and descriptions of these databases and information about the requirements of each one. The URL and description of each client's site is manually entered into each of the free databases on our master list. If a database which charges a nominal fee suits a client's particular organization, the client will be notified and the requirements and listing options presented.
III. Internet Subject Catalogs and Directories
Internet Subject Catalogs, sometimes called "Subject Indexes", are lists of links
organized by content. Usually the content is organized hierarchically, from general topics to levels of increasing specificity.
Subject catalogs are useful for people who have a general idea about the information
they are seeking but would like to view the available options to help narrow their search.
Some of the large subject catalogs like Yahoo provide on-line search options. Others provide links only. The most helpful ones provide an abstract or a description of what each link offers.
Like the databases, some are free and some charge a fee. Some accept only a URL
and some will display a more comprehensive description of a product or service.
IV. Specialized WWW Sites
There are many hundreds of high quality Web sites which are maintained by
individuals and organizations and which provide listings. Like the other
resources described above, some are free and some charge a fee.
Some accept only a URL and some will display a more comprehensive description of a
product or service. The specialized Web sites are a vaulable resource. These
sites often provide actual content rather than merely the means to the content.
Our Master List includes a large number of the Web's best organized and most popular
specialized sites which welcome notification about new, complimentary Web sites.
In addition, we continually seek out sites that provide high
quality content complimenting the products and services offered by each of our
clients.
General Information
Those who maintain the large Internet Search Engines and Internet databases, subject
catalogs and directories each have their own criteria in place which determines if and when a particular listing may become a part of their program. There is no assurance that a listing will be included in any database or directory. The staff at Tela, in addition to maintaining the master list of these sites, monitors the sites, and, when possible, contacts the organizations which maintain the sites to make certain that the required criteria is accommodated.
The Web is in a state of constant change and growth. Sites offering search databases
and directories, like any other Web site, can merge or melt or merely change names and site locations. Our master list is continually being updated, but there can be no assurances that a client's product or service will be accepted or, if accepted, will remain in any particular database or directory.
Some of the search engines, databases and searchable specialized directories
are listed on Tela's Search Site.
